Santa Cueva Oratory is a fantastic site representing Cadiz city’s glory in the 17th and 18th centuries. This not-well-known diamond offers unique details that few are aware of. Here there are three paintings by the world-known Spanish painter Goya. The paintings are named “The multiplication of the loaves and the fishes”, “The royal Treat”, and “The last supper”. All amazing art work. The composer Joseph Hayden made the composition “The Seven Words of Christ on the Cross” for Santa Cueva.

Santa Catalina is an incredible castle built like a five-pointed star just by the sea in the late 16th century. The intention when Santa Catalina was made was to use it as a defensive fortress; however, in 1769, the castle became a prison. Some American liberals and independentists were taken here during the American invasion of Spain. The castle was maintained as a castle until 1991. In 1993 Santa Catalina Castle was declared Spanish Cultural Heritage and is now used as a tourist attraction for special events.

The Roman Theatre from Gades is the oldest and the second biggest of the Hispania Roman Empire. Even Julio Cesar himself was present in this theatre. Relevant characters, Ciceron and Estragon from the period, have included this jewel in their written work. Estragon tells in his texts how Gades was extended after Lucius Cornelius Balbus, a wealthy Roman politician and businessman of Punic, decided to add a new part to the town (Neapolis) in the 1st century B.C. and, with this new part, a new theatre.

Travel 3.000 years back in time back to the origin of Cadiz. Gadir Archaeological Site takes us underground and travels to the 9th century B.C. when the Phoenicians lived and governed in what they called Gadir. The Gadir Archaeological Site was found under the current Puppet Theatre in the middle of Cadiz’s old town. The Phoenicians came from Tiro due to their excellent navigation and commercial skills. They arrived in the area to extend their commercial zone and decided that the bay in front of the Guadalete river was the perfect place.
